Not all diets are planned with weight-loss in mind. Some diets are followed to avoid a food your body reacts with, and others focus on eating a surplus of certain foods to increase your health benefits. Other diets are put in place simply to encourage a healthier lifestyle. The paleo diet is one of these diets.

With so many diets available on the internet at any given moment, it can be confusing to understand the purpose for each one. Is this a weight loss diet? Is it safe to follow long-term? Is this diet right for you? The gluten free diet in particular has been mistaken as a weight loss diet, but its original intentions were to help people with a gluten intolerance.

All diets limit people in something–some suggest you stop eating once you hit a certain calorie count, while others cut gluten, dairy, red meat, etc. Many people find diets hard to follow for this reason, complaining about feeling hungry or deprived. The Atkins diet takes a different approach to weight loss, advertising that it “guides you to eat well–not less.” But what does the Atkins diet entail?

Finding a sustainable diet for a healthy lifestyle can be a challenge. Many find weight loss diets too restrictive, and more often than not a diet ends the minute the goal is met, which often leads to reverting back to the original bad habits you were following before the diet. The Mediterranean diet, however, is one that is praised for its practicality and ability to be followed in the long-term.

While many people think of diets as something used to lose weight, there are so many other types of diets. Some diets, for example, are used primarily to relieve uncomfortable symptoms someone may be feeling, and diets can help with anything from headaches to digestive issues. The FODMAP diet is a diet that is meant to be used temporarily to soothe symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS.)

With so many differing opinions when it comes to losing weight and eating healthy, there is nothing short of hundreds of diets to choose from. Some diets are based on calorie deficit, others on excluding certain foods, and others are meant to help minimize health effects. The GERD, for example, is a diet used to minimize acid reflux, and its health benefits do not stop there.

In a city renowned for its space center, Houston thrives in the world of research and medicine. Not only do tourists come to visit NASA’s mission control center, but patients also flock to the world’s largest medical complex, Texas Medical Center. With the influx of people coming into Houston on top of those who already live there, the Houston water system provides water to over 2.4 million people (1). With so many people consuming their water, it is vital to ensure the water is up to standard.

Known as the “Theme Park Capital of the World,” Orlando is home to major theme parks, including Disney World, Universal Studios, SeaWorld, and Legoland. Because of its draw for family fun, over 74 million tourists visit Orlando each year (1). With an extreme number of tourists and employees needed to keep the parks running smoothly, it is crucial to understand the water quality of the drinking water in Orlando.

Denver, Colorado, the “Mile High City,” boasts many reasons to visit: From the craft breweries to three major colleges to a booming arts scene, Denver is home to not only its residents, but to college students, tourists, and commuters working within the city. With over 1.5 million people getting their water from Denver’s water supply, it is crucial to know what is inside their water.

Philadelphia, a city best known for its Super Bowl-winning football team and delicious cheese steaks, attracts millions of tourists each year. Because of the constant stream of tourists, the city demands an expansive water system to provide residents and visitors alike with adequate, safe water.

While nearly all of Georgia’s rural population rely on private wells for their water supply, big cities like Atlanta rely on the government to provide safe water to its residents. In order to do so, Atlanta has implemented rigorous water screening methodologies to ensure their water meets local and federal guidelines.

In a city surrounded by desert, having access to water–especially in seasons of drought and sweltering summers–is a necessity. The local government works diligently to reduce water usage to keep its citizens well supplied with available tap water. The question then becomes: Is tap water in Phoenix safe to drink?
